Abstract- In engineering grades, the accomplishment of experimental practices is limited to a real presence in the laboratory installations. Nevertheless, the development of remote environments has facilitated the use of experimental equipment outside the laboratory, avoiding the spatial and temporary barriers. There are so many initiatives that provides real interaction with the laboratory equipment, but no methodology exits that allows getting a unified vision of the development and access to these laboratories, that is to say, an specification of the experimental environment. This paper describes a specification proposal that relies about the definition of the laboratory components and the functionality of the experimentation environment in terms of these components. Using this approach, it will be possible to focus on the accomplishment of experiments and define them as reusable units of learning in an independent way. The component descriptions are defined in terms of XML tags and also a development framework is modelled in order to add tools for experiment designers and to provide a visual interaction with the laboratory.

Title- A Graphical Language to Model Learning Units in Engineering
Abstract- This paper introduces a graphical language to support the creation of computational models of educational units: PoEML (Perspective-oriented EML). In general, EMLs (Educational Modelling Languages) are devoted to support the modelling of educational units. PoEML approaches the modelling of educational units following the separation-of-concerns principle. The main idea underlying PoEML is to break down the modelling of educational units into separate parts that can be specified step by step. In correspondence, the model of each part can be represented by a different graphical diagram, involving specific elements and relations. This separation-of-concerns approach simplifies the development of models while a high expressiveness is offered. Particularly, it supports the development of engineering educational units. In addition, it also enables to improve the reusability, adaptability and flexibility of the created models.

Title- Collaborative recommender system using distributed rule mining for improving web-based adaptive courses.
Abstract- Nowadays, the application of data mining techniques in e-learning and web based adaptive educational systems is increasing exponentially. The discovered useful information can be used directly by the teacher or the author of the course to improve the instructional/learning performance. This can be an arduous task and therefore educational recommender systems are used in order to help the teacher in this task. In this paper we describe a recommender system oriented to suggest the most appropriate modifications to the teacher in order to improve the effectiveness of the course. We propose to use a cyclical methodology to develop and carry out the maintenance of web-based courses in which we have added a specific data mining step. We have developed a distributed rule mining system in order to discover information in the form of IFTHEN recommendation rules about the web courses. We have used an iterative and interactive association rule algorithm without parameters and with a weight-based evaluation measure of the rule interest. And we have used a collaborative recommender system to share and score the obtained recommendation rules in one specific course between teachers of other similar courses and some experts in education. Finally, we have carried out several experiments with real students in order to determine the effectiveness of the proposed system and the utility of the recommended rules.

In the new paradigm, the evaluation of the work carried out by the student in a continuous way conduct us to the use of technological resources for supervising the activities carried out in particular, off the classroom. Such resources are known as e-learning platforms (distance learning). All Spanish universities have implemented (or are started to implement) this kind of e-learning systems, so in this work a detailed revision of the characteristics of the different platforms in the Spanish university area is shown.

Title- How do we use Moodle in our subjects adapted to the European Higher Education Area
Abstract- This paper describes how do we use our digital campus based on Moodle as a key tool in our subjects. These subjects belong to a first course in an engineering degree and have been adapted to the requirements of the European Higher Education Area in accordance with an educational model whose essential elements are the detailed planning of student work, both in class and out of class, and the evaluation of student work with frequent feedback. Our experience indicates that the digital campus has become an essential tool that allows us to be very productive in implementing the educational model, in a scenario with several groups of class and several teachers teaching the same program. This paper describes our educational model and how few resources our Moodle based digital campus are used to support key elements of this model.

Title- A guide for researchers in education
Abstract- Engineering is evolving very fast, and we must prepare our students to not become obsolete when still in their youth. Without a steady improvement in quality the teaching levels in our universities’ will decline due to the more complex context of today’s universities. Unfortunately, professors who work hard to improve and innovate in engineering education find their work to be unappreciated by their colleagues and superiors. Engineering education is considered as something that over-enthusiastic professors do ‘on the side’ and instead of ‘real’ research. In this paper we analyze the professional associations related with engineering education, as well as the conferences, symposia and journals on the field, and show that by the typical measurable standards, Engineering Education is at the same level as any other technical engineering field.

Title- RC Sinusoidal Oscillators with AmpOps: Simulation and Practical Realization at Laboratory.
Abstract- Experimental based learning is important engineering courses to enrich student’s skills and knowledge. In electronics, subjects related to sinusoidal oscillators are good to consolidate knowledge on different matters at undergraduate level. Is also facilitates the interconnection of theoretical and practical aspects from other courses and allows the verification of some non-linear effects. This paper proposes a hands-on approach methodology which combines simulation and real experimentation at laboratory, using circuit simulation software and experimental verification at laboratory of simple yet reliable electronic circuits, and students can build their own experiments on breadboard with no significant overload. The proposed experiments are suited for both, laboratory classes or students own work or self study, which may lead to significant revenues on the learning process.

Title- Educational tool for the design and configuration of communication networks.
Abstract- In this paper, we describe a simple tool for the design of communication networks. On the one hand, it provides an interface for students, where they can add, remove or configure components. Been a web application, pupils can work everywhere, which promotes an informal learning environment. On the other hand, professors can visualize student’s projects and gather reports about their activity. In conclusion, it is a tool that provides a soft transition to more professional tools.

Title- Assessment of Competences in University Degrees Using Data Mining Techniques
Abstract- Nowadays the successful acquisition of competences is the base for the achievement of the professional skills and, consequently, the educational methodologies need to be reconsidered. This work describes a methodological procedure proposed to help educational experts to assess if the competences developed in a degree program are really acquired by the student. Due to the huge amount of information, this analysis is addressed through Data Mining techniques. The procedure has been successfully tested in the Computer Engineering and in the Telecommunication Engineering degrees of our institution. The analysis of results allowed experts to identify some non promoted competences.

Title- Outcome-based assessment in Final Year Projects
Abstract- This paper presents an efficient and objective procedure for the outcome-based assessment of engineering final year projects, both at graduate (FYP-G) and postgraduate levels (FYP-P). The procedure consists of 6 steps: (1) Definition of the FYP-G and FYP-P outcomes and observable descriptors; (2) set-up of the assessment milestones, the specific assessment actions to be carried out and the assessment agents; (3) assignment of descriptors to assessment actions; (4) definition of the level that the student must reach for every descriptor; (5) design of the assessment reports to be fulfill by the assessment agents, and, (6) establishment of the procedure to setting the student final mark from the assessment reports. Aids for the six steps implementation, as polls, learning outcomes files and practical examples, are shown along this paper.

Title- Promoting Strong Personalization in Content-based Recommendation Systems of Learning Objects.
Abstract- Recommendation technologies have a clear application in e-learning: providing support for personalized access to the Learning Objects (LOs) that exist in repositories. In this paper we describe a novel approach that fosters a strong personalized content-based recommendation of LOs. This approach gives priority to those LOs that are most similar to the student’s short-term learning goals (the concepts that the student wants to learn in the session) and, at the same time, have a high pedagogical utility in the light of the student’s cognitive state (long-term learning goals). The paper includes the definition of a flexible metric that combines the similarity with the query and the pedagogical utility of the LO. We finally describe the application of the approach to an educational repository of Computer Programming LOs.
